The coastside was so foggy you could hardly see the road, let alone the
water as we drove down Highway 1. The sun began to break through as we
approached Santa Cruz; it heralded a sunny day that warmed up
considerably as we turned inland to Felton. The grounds of the Roaring
Camp & Big Trees Narrow-Gauge Railroad are fun. Period buildings
accomodate the ticket booth, gift shop and offices.
The 12:15 train was full; this was fine because we were hungry after the
hour-plus car trip. The barbeque smelled inviting, but we had brought
our own feast, which included birthday cake with all the trimmings for
one of our younger participants. We picnicked near the pond; threw
bread to the ducks when we were done. The kids also had fun just
running around the grounds (to the consternation of their parents, on
occasion) and making hats for their fingers from the tops of acorns.
We chose to take the train to Bear Mountain rather than Santa Cruz.
Next time we'll be slower to board. The contingent that did not sit in
the caboose got way hot sitting on the benches while the train prepared
to leave. The kids had each gotten a conductor's hat as a take-home
prize at the party. These helped to keep the sun off. And we cooled
off some once the train was underway and underbrush. The trees that
surround you are truly impressive, as are the plumes of smoke from the
locomotive. The ride provided time for the adults to talk and a number
of the kids were soothed into naps by the rhythm of the train. A
pleasant way to spend a day. Just remember to dress in layers and bring
sunscreen.
