Building and Programming Robots: Part 3

The Robot Challenge: Part 3 --

My kids and I decided to learn how to build and program robots this summer.

None of that virtual stuff for the 13 year old. She wants to build a living, breathing robot that moves through real, not cyberspace. And, since dealing with the physical world is an interesting thing for kids to learn to do, I did not object.

Our first lesson: The Never-Look-Back Machine

It was late on a lazy Sunday morning when we first got started. We were well-rested and eager to begin. We dug Lego Crazy Action Contraptions out from the pile on my desk.

The first construction in the book is called "The Never-Look-Back-Machine". We estimated it would take less than half an hour to complete. Which it did, but it was harder than it looked. The hardest part was getting the little paper pieces to stay in the slots in the plastic (we decided to use scotch tape). Another hard part was getting the pegs out of the pieces once we'd put them in the pieces. (No easy solution there.)

We agreed that we had fun doing this and decided to go on to Lesson Two.
